The concept of governmentality from Michel Foucault refers to power as a regulation of others and power as a relationship with self. It is political and ethical. In this regard, Antoinette Rouvroy and Thomas Berns’ analysis of “algorithmic governmentality” sheds light on the formation of a new type of rationality within a generalized automated system that transforms social control on behaviours, media communications and “the regime of truth” with the aid of real-time, self-learning probabilistic statistical algorithms tracing and anticipating data providers’ behaviour. The evolving artificial intelligence acceleratingly refreshes the norms, agitating us with anxiety and relentless wariness of its “pharmakon”.
This event will invite Devin Ronneberg, the participating artist of CAC exhibition AI Delivered: the Abject, and AI researcher CAO Jianfeng to have a conversation centring on the topic “AI Governmentality”. On the basis of his project Fever Dream, a collaborated piece with Kite, Ronneberg will explore the ways in which colonial ideologies apply AI for the collection and categorization of our data to better predict and control our behaviour and the dangers of treating AI as a tool in human control. CAO will then introduce audiences to his research domain, artificial intelligence law and ethics, to further examine the power relationship between AI and humans.
CAO Jianfeng (Jeff)
CAO Jianfeng (Jeff), is a senior research fellow at Tencent Research Institute, Distinguished Researcher at ECUPL Digital Law Institute, Guest Professor at Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, and the member of the council of Information & Communication Law Branch of Guangdong Province Law Society. His research focuses on policy, legal, ethical, and societal issues related to frontier digital technologies and digital economy, such as AI governance and ethics, autonomous vehicle policy, platform & data governance, legal tech & digital justice, blockchain regulation, digital IP. He is a frequent speaker at top-level AI conferences, and he has published hundreds of papers and articles on top-level journals, newspapers, and media. His papers were reprinted by Chinese Social Science Digest and Renmin University of China’ Social Sciences Databases. His experience in China’s internet industry, his contact with policy makers, and his connection with academia help him seeing many issues related to the Internet and other emerging technologies from a holistic and systematic way.
Devin Ronneberg
Devin Ronneberg is a multidisciplinary artist born, raised, and living in Los Angeles, working primarily in sculpture, sound, image-making, networking, engineering, and computational media, his work is currently focused on the unseen implications of emergent technologies and artificial intelligence, information control and collection, and the radiation of invisible forces. Incorporating aerospace engineering techniques as the basis for his sculptural practice, his work explores the possibilities of modern manufacturing and materialities with techniques and materials used in the design and prototyping of hand-built experimental aircraft.
