On the occasion of the opening of the exhibition AI Delivered:The Abject on July 3 at Chronus Art Center, participating artist Lauren Lee McCarthy will present the performance LAUREN.

LAUREN is a human version of Alexa, a smart home intelligence for people in their own homes. In this exhibition, LAUREN is presented as a performative piece that begins with the interaction between an audience and a series of custom designed networked smart devices (including cameras, microphones, akettle, speakers and other appliances). The artist remotely watches over the person residing in the cozy home-like evrionement and controls all aspects of it. The artist aims to be better than an AI as a person who can understand the residents and anticipate their needs. LAUREN is a meditation on the smart home, the tensions between intimacy vs privacy, convenience vs agency they present, and the role of human labor in the future of automation.

The performance will be divided into 8 time slots. Each one lasts 20 minutes during which a participant will immerse in a bedroom-like environment to negotiate boundaries of the smart home intelligence system via his/her interaction with the smart devices custom designed by the artist.

Each participant will receive a special gift package including a pair of slippers and an eye mask!
