About the Lecture

In crafting experiences through objects and interactions, what can we know about the feelings that make an experience compelling and memorable? What can we try to understand about how emotions are evoked and how the mind responds to complex stimuli? Attempting to connect some dots between cognitive psychology, machine intelligence, and art and design, Jacob Tonski will share some of his recent thoughts on these questions as well as related strategies he employs in his own creative work with the goal of expanding how we know ourselves.

 

About the Lecturer

Jacob Tonski is an Associate Professor of Art & Technology Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He worked as a Technical Director at Pixar Animation Studios and has received an Award of Distinction from Ars Electronica in 2014. He was awarded a 2013 Sustainable Arts Foundation grant and was a 2010 fellow at the Carnegie Mellon University Studio for Creative Inquiry.

Tonski studied computer science at Brown University. He holds an MFA from the Design | Media Arts department at UCLA. His work explores dynamic balance through kinetic metaphors, suspending viewers in distilled cognition, blurring separation between feeling and thought.
