This 12-month fellowship program is designed to host international artists and researchers of extraordinary talents in the area of media art to conduct research and creation at Chronus Art Center (CAC) in Shanghai with an aim to foster global exchange in advancing the discourse and practice of media art, to contribute to CAC's research and educational mission, and for the institution's future collection.
This Fellowship is a chance for international artists/researchers to engage and learn from the art, technological and entrepreneurial community of Shanghai in a direct way. Applicants can apply as individual or as a team. During this one-year program, the selected researcher/artist is expected to realize his/her research proposal, to work in CAC lab with CAC research/creation team on related activities, to actively contribute to the larger CAC community as collaborative partners to other residents and as principal leads in research initiatives, programs, and public engagement as well as leaders in development of current focus areas of the organization.
FELLOWSHIP FOCUS
In the inaugural year of the Research and Creation Fellowship program, we are seeking project proposals that explore CAC’s four focus areas of research and creation:
a) Emotive Networks and Haptic Gaming
b) Networked Generative Art
c) Future Cinema and Television
d) Intelligent Music and Audiovisual Systems
CAC’s research and creation values research (including culture and technology) as the essential and initial step that leads to art creation, and through encouraging cross-disciplinary collaborations and collective thinking as the mode of production it brings the methodology of scientific inquiry into the thinking and practice of art. By accentuating the dynamic synergy of art and science as a response to the challenges and opportunities that contemporary media society has given rise to, CAC brings to the public awareness of the impending post-human reality and the resulting social and political implications.
FELLOWSHIP SUPPORT
One selected Fellow (either as an individual or as a team) will be offered a total amount of $30,000 grant with a projected one year deep-immersion period to cover artist fees and direct costs, including materials during his/her residency in Shanghai.
CAC is happy to provide necessary paperwork and advice to help international Fellow expedite the process of securing his/her visa, travel and accommodation in Shanghai whereas all the expenses will be covered within the amount of the fellowship.
CAC will work closely with the selected Fellow to see his/her project realized and offer program support in developing work for performance, events, seminars, exhibitions, or other public and educational programming during the term of the Fellowship.
