About the Lecture

In the 60’s, with the birth of the so-called “expanded cinema”, films are migrating from the closed venues of the movie theaters towards open space in which artists and filmmakers begin to experiment, at the crossing of different media, new ways of combining film and technology. During the decade, Stan Vanderbeek in his Movie Drome Theater at Stony Point, Jordan Belson and Henri Jacobs with their Concert Series presented at the Observatory of San Francisco, Billy Klüver with the 9 Evenings he organized with a group of avant-garde artists, musicians, dancers and the help of engineers from Bell Telecommunication and many others reactivate the Wagnerian myth of the total art work (the Gesamtkunstwerk), transforming deeply the perception and the definition of film, a transformation of which the influence is still lasting today.

About the Speaker

Philippe-Alain Michaud is Curator at the Musée National d’Art Moderne – Centre Pompidou in charge of the collection of films. He is Professor at ERG (Ecole de Recherche Graphique) Brussels and Visiting Professor at the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, since 2008. He is the author of Aby Warburg and the Image in Motion(Zone Books, 2002 and Macula 2012), Le peuple des images (Desclée de Brouwer, 2004), Sur le film (Macula, 2016) and has written extensively on the relations between film and visual arts. He has curated a number of exhibitions among which : Comme le rêve le dessin (Musée du Louvre/Centre Pompidou, 2004), Le mouvement des images (Centre Pompidou, 2006), Nuits électriques (Musée de la photographie, Moscou and Laboral, Gijon, Spain, 2007), Tapis volants (Villa Medici, Rome and Les Abattoirs, Toulouse, 2010), Images sans fin, Brancusi photographie, film (Centre Pompidou, 2012, with Clément Cheroux and Quentin Bajac),  Beat Generation (Centre Pompidou, 2016, with Rani Singh and Jean-Jacques Lebel).

➙ As an installment of the Leonardo Art, Sicence and Technology Lecture Series 2017, this lecture will be premiered at Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) on May 10th.
